Trail Notes
What we noticed on the ground
Located in central eastern New Mexico is a most unique state park, Bottomless Lakes State Park. I found this New Mexico State Park to be home to a most unique geologic formation. Eons ago a geologic rift led to the formation of caverns that eventually collapsed into a series of lakes. These types of lakes are called cenotes. Each individual lake actually has a different water chemistry making these a truly unique geologic feature. Early settlers were unable to drop enough fishing line into the lakes to touch the bottom and thus took to calling them “bottomless”. These cenotes are actually not bottomless but the deepest one has a depth of 140 feet. Bottomless Lakes State Park was constructed by the CCC in the New Deal era. Great care was taken to provide a great place to recreate as well as preserve these truly unique cenotes. Join me as I explore Bottomless Lakes State Park in New Mexico.
