Transformer Sizing

Outdoor Lighting · Learning · Transformer Sizing

The transformer is the backbone of a low-voltage lighting system. Undersize it and fixtures dim or circuits fail. Oversize with a plan and you leave room for trees, pads, and future phases.

Start with fixture load

Add the wattage (or VA) of every fixture on the circuit. Include a healthy headroom margin so the system is not running at the edge on day one.

Plan for expansion

Homestead lighting rarely ends after Phase 1. Entry, trees, barn washes, and RV pads often follow. Size for known fixtures plus planned zones when possible.

Controls and timers

Photocells, timers, and zoning help match light to real use — dusk arrival, entertaining, and overnight pathway needs.
